2 Peter 3Book 61 of 66 · 18 verses · MBT primary, NKJV fallback where MBT pending
This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you — in both of which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder,
that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Savior given through your apostles —
knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts,
and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation."
For they deliberately overlook this fact: that long ago by the word of God the heavens existed, and the earth was formed out of water and through water,
by which the world that then existed was destroyed by being flooded with water.
But by the same word, the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire — being kept until the day of judgment and the destruction of ungodly people.
But do not overlook this one fact, beloved: with the Lord, one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
The Lord is not slow concerning His promise, as some count slowness — but He is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief — in which the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the elements will be dissolved with intense heat, and the earth and the works that are on it will be exposed.
Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what kind of people ought you to be — in holy conduct and godliness,
looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, on account of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the elements will melt with intense heat?
But according to His promise, we are looking for new heavens and a new earth — in which righteousness dwells.
Therefore, beloved — since you are looking for these things — be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless.
And consider the patience of our Lord as salvation — just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you, according to the wisdom given to him,
speaking of these things in all his letters — in which there are some things hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.
You therefore, beloved — knowing this beforehand — be on guard, so that you are not carried away by the error of the lawless and lose your own steadfastness.
But grow in the grace and full knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
