Genesis 11Book 1 of 66 · 32 verses · MBT primary, NKJV fallback where MBT pending
Now the whole earth used one language and the same words.
And it came to pass, as the people journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they settled there.
Then they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly." And they used brick for stone, and they used asphalt for mortar.
And they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, otherwise we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth."
But the LORD came down to look at the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
And the LORD said, "Indeed the people are united and they all have one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do; now nothing that they propose to do will be impossible for them.
Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language so that they may not understand one another's speech.
So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city.
Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
This is the account of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of Arphaxad two years after the flood.
After he begot Arphaxad, Shem lived another five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.
When Arphaxad had lived thirty-five years, he became the father of Shelah.
After he fathered Shelah, Arphaxad lived another four hundred and three years, and had other sons and daughters.

After he begot Eber, Salah lived four hundred and three years, and had other sons and daughters.
Eber lived thirty-four years and became the father of Peleg.
After he begot Peleg, Eber lived another four hundred and thirty years, and begot other sons and daughters.
When Peleg had lived thirty years, he became the father of Reu.
After he fathered Reu, Peleg lived another two hundred and nine years, and had other sons and daughters.
When Reu had lived thirty-two years, he became the father of Serug.
After he fathered Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years, and had other sons and daughters.

When Terah had lived seventy years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
This is the account of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran begot Lot.
And Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
Abram and Nahor both took wives for themselves: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and Iscah.
But Sarai was barren and unable to conceive; she had no child.
Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram's wife, and they set out together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan, but when they came to Haran, they settled there.
So the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died while in Haran.
