Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelite traders who had taken him down there.
The LORD was with Joseph, so he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD caused all he did to succeed in his hand.
So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal attendant, and he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority.
From the time that he put him in charge of his household and all that he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake, and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had in the house and in the field.
Thus he left all that he had in Joseph's charge, and he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.
And it came to pass after these events that his master's wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said, "Lie with me."
But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house because of me, and he has committed all that he has to my charge.
There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he withheld anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?
So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day after day, that he refused to listen to her, to lie with her or to be with her.
But one day when Joseph went into the house to do his work, none of the men of the household was inside.
She caught him by his garment, demanding "Lie with me," but he left his garment in her hand and fled and ran outside.
When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled out of the house,
She called to the men of her household and spoke to them, saying, "See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to make fools of us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.
And it happened, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and screamed, that he left his garment beside me, and fled and got outside.
So she kept his garment beside her until his master came home.
Then she told him the same story, saying, "The Hebrew slave whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me;
So it happened, as I raised my voice and screamed, that he left his garment beside me and fled outside.
So it was, when his master heard the story which his wife spoke to him, saying, "Your servant treated me in this manner," that his anger was kindled.
Then Joseph's master took him and threw him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined, and he was there in the prison.
But the LORD was with Joseph and extended mercy to him, and He gave him favor in the sight of the chief keeper of the prison.
The warden of the prison committed to Joseph's charge all the prisoners who were in the prison, and whatever was done there, he was responsible for it.
The keeper of the prison did not supervise anything that was under Joseph's charge, because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made it succeed.
