The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.
Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram.
Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon.
Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed was the father of Jesse,
and Jesse fathered King David. David was the father of Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.
Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa.
Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah,
Uzziah was the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, and Amon the father of Josiah.
Josiah became the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
After the deportation to Babylon, Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel.
Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor,
Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud,
Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob.
And Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, who gave birth to Jesus who is called the Christ.
So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Christ, fourteen generations.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant from the Holy Spirit.
Then Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly.
But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, 'Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
And she will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.
Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel, which means, God with us.
When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took Mary as his wife,
but did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. And he named him Jesus.
