Adoption (Doctrine)
/əˈdɒp.ʃən/
noun (doctrine)
Greek huiothesia (υἱοθεσία) — literally "placing as son," from huios ("son") + thesis ("placing"). The gracious act of God by which He takes sinners who have been justified and makes them His own children, with all the privileges of sonship — adoption into the family of God.

📖 Biblical Definition

Adoption is the staggering truth that God not only forgives sinners but makes them His own children. Justification is the legal verdict ("not guilty"); adoption is the familial status ("my son"). J.I. Packer famously wrote in Knowing God: "Adoption is the highest privilege that the gospel offers... To be right with God the Judge is a great thing, but to be loved and cared for by God the Father is a greater." Paul uses the Greek word huiothesia five times (Romans 8:15, 23; Romans 9:4; Galatians 4:5; Ephesians 1:5). The word literally means "placing as son" — a legal act in the Roman world by which an outsider was given all the rights, inheritance, and family name of the adopting father. Scripture teaches several things about Christian adoption. First, it is by grace alone — "having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will" (Ephesians 1:5). Second, it gives us a new Father — the Spirit of adoption cries "Abba, Father" (Romans 8:15, Galatians 4:6). Third, it gives us an inheritance — "and if children, then heirs — heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ" (Romans 8:17). Fourth, it gives us assurance — "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" (Romans 8:16). Fifth, it gives us discipline — "whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives" (Hebrews 12:6). Sixth, it will one day be consummated in the resurrection of the body (Romans 8:23). Adoption is not just a benefit of salvation; it is the relational heart of it. God does not merely pardon us; He takes us home.
