Andrew
/ˈæn.druː/
proper noun
Greek Andreas (Ἀνδρέας) — from aner/andros ("man"); a strong, manly name. Brother of Simon Peter and one of the first two disciples Jesus called. A patient, quiet apostle whose consistent pattern was bringing others to Jesus.

📖 Biblical Definition

Andrew was the brother of Simon Peter and one of the first two men Jesus called to be His disciples. In the other Gospels he is always introduced by reference to his more famous brother: "Simon Peter's brother, Andrew." But John's Gospel gives us Andrew's own story. Andrew was originally a disciple of John the Baptist (John 1:35-40). When John pointed out Jesus and said, "Behold the Lamb of God!" Andrew and another disciple followed Jesus to where He was staying and spent the day with Him. "He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, 'We have found the Messiah' (which is translated, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus" (John 1:41-42). This is the first recorded act in Peter's whole career: being brought to Jesus by His brother Andrew. Without Andrew, no Peter. Andrew's pattern — bringing people to Jesus — repeats. When the crowd of 5,000 was hungry, it was Andrew who brought the boy with the five loaves and two fish to Jesus (John 6:8-9). When some Greeks came wanting to see Jesus, they approached Philip; Philip told Andrew; Andrew and Philip together brought the request to Jesus (John 12:20-22). Andrew's whole ministry seems to be a series of introductions: he finds someone, he brings them to Jesus, and Jesus does the rest. He is never the center, never the loud voice, never the named leader. But no one knows how much the early church depended on Andrew, because the evangelists he introduced to Jesus became the named ones. Tradition says Andrew was eventually crucified in Greece on an X-shaped cross (the "Andrew's cross" of the Scottish flag), and that he preached along the Black Sea into what is now Russia. Every church needs Andrews — the brothers who simply bring people to Jesus and step back.
