Cloud of Glory
noun phrase
The visible manifestation of God's presence

📖 Biblical Definition

The visible manifestation of God's presence — what Hebrew Scripture calls the kavod (weight, glory) and the rabbis later named the Shekinah. The cloud descends at Sinai (Ex 19:16-18), leads Israel through the wilderness as pillar of cloud by day and fire by night (Ex 13:21-22), fills the tabernacle at its completion (Ex 40:34-38), and overshadows Solomon's temple so that the priests cannot stand to minister (1 Kgs 8:10-11). Christ ascends in a cloud (Acts 1:9) and returns the same way (Rev 1:7; Matt 24:30). The cloud is not weather; it is the LORD condescending to be seen while keeping His infinity from being contained. Where the cloud is, there is the dwelling of God with His people.
