The full measure of divine judgment poured out, imaged as a cup the wicked must drink to the dregs. The OT prophetic image: thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it (Jer 25:15; cf. Isa 51:17, 22; Hab 2:16; Ps 75:8). At Gethsemane, Christ prays O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me (Matt 26:39) — not the cup of physical suffering alone but the cup of His Father's wrath against sin, which He alone could drain to the bottom and exhaust on behalf of His people. The cup the Christian receives at communion (1 Cor 10:16) is the cup of blessing precisely because Christ drank the cup of wrath in full.
