Davidic Covenant
/dəˈvɪd.ɪk ˈkʌv.ən.ənt/
noun phrase
The covenant God made with King David in 2 Samuel 7 (and repeated in 1 Chronicles 17 and Psalm 89), promising an eternal throne and an everlasting dynasty through David's line. Ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Son of David.

📖 Biblical Definition

The Davidic Covenant is God's unilateral promise to David that his throne would endure forever. When David proposed building a temple for the LORD, God answered through Nathan the prophet: "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you... I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever... My mercy shall not depart from him... Your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever" (2 Samuel 7:12-16). This promise was fulfilled immediately through Solomon but ultimately in Jesus Christ, whom the angel Gabriel announced as the promised Son: "He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end" (Luke 1:32-33). Peter's Pentecost sermon drove it home: David "being a prophet... spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption" (Acts 2:30-31). The Davidic Covenant is one of the primary reasons Jesus is called "Son of David" throughout the Gospels. The throne promised to David is now occupied by his greater Son, and that throne is eternal.
