Great Physician
noun / title
Christ as the healer of body and soul

📖 Biblical Definition

Christ as the healer of body and soul. The title is implicit in Christ's own words: they that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance (Matt 9:12-13). The Gospels record His healing of physical disease repeatedly (Matt 4:23-24; Mk 1:32-34; Lk 4:40), but the deeper healing is spiritual: the forgiveness of sins (Mk 2:5), the casting out of unclean spirits, the raising of the dead. The great physician addresses the whole patient — body, soul, spirit — and unlike all other physicians, His ultimate cure is the resurrection of the body itself (1 Cor 15:42-44).
