Lot
/lɒt/
proper noun
Hebrew Lot (לוֹט) — "covering, veil." Nephew of Abraham who accompanied him from Ur, chose the plain of the Jordan, settled in Sodom, was rescued when Sodom was destroyed, and is called "righteous Lot" by Peter despite his compromises.

📖 Biblical Definition

Lot is a complicated figure — a warning and a curiosity at once. When Abraham let Lot choose which way to go, Lot "lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah)" (Genesis 13:10). He chose the most prosperous-looking option — and the narrator darkly adds "but the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD." Lot gradually drifted into the city itself. By Genesis 19 he was sitting in the city gate (the place of elders). When two angels came to destroy Sodom, Lot showed remarkable hospitality and tried to protect them from the lustful mob, even offering his own daughters in their place (a horrifying compromise). The angels dragged Lot, his wife, and two daughters out of the city by the hand as fire fell. Lot's wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. His daughters later got him drunk and committed incest with him, bearing Moab and Ammon. And yet — Peter calls him "righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked" (2 Peter 2:7-8). Lot was saved, but barely. His life is a warning about the cost of prosperity-first choices and the peril of settling where your children will breathe the wrong air.
