Loyalty (Biblical)
/ˈlɔɪ.əl.ti/
noun
From Old French loialte, from Latin legalis ("legal, faithful to obligations"). In Scripture, loyalty translates the Hebrew chesed — covenant faithfulness — and is one of the defining qualities of a man of God.

📖 Biblical Definition

Loyalty in the biblical sense is covenant faithfulness — the quality of staying when staying is hard. The great Hebrew word for it is chesed, often translated "steadfast love" or "lovingkindness," but at its core it means the loyalty that keeps promises even when the other party has broken theirs. It is what God is toward His people: "Your mercy [chesed] endures forever" (Psalm 136, repeated 26 times). It is what Ruth vowed to Naomi: "Entreat me not to leave you, or to turn back from following after you; for wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God" (Ruth 1:16). It is what Jonathan showed David when David was hunted by Jonathan's own father Saul: a friend who loved him "as his own soul" (1 Samuel 18:1), who risked his throne and his life for his friend. Biblical loyalty is not mere tribalism (supporting your side no matter what). It is covenantal — ordered under God's higher claims. When human loyalty conflicts with loyalty to God, the higher loyalty wins: "We ought to obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29). But within its proper limits, loyalty is a foundational virtue. A disloyal man is a dangerous man: "A faithful man, who can find?" asks Proverbs 20:6. The modern world has forgotten how to keep its word. The Christian must remember, because our God is faithful, and we are called to be like Him.
