The New Heavens and New Earth is the ultimate destination of all redemptive history. Heaven is not the final destination of the believer; the New Earth is. The Christian hope is not disembodied spirits floating on clouds but resurrected bodies walking a renewed creation. Isaiah promised it: "For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered or come to mind" (Isaiah 65:17). Peter picked up the promise: "Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells" (2 Peter 3:13). And John's Revelation gives us the fullest picture (Revelation 21-22). John sees "a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea" (21:1). The Holy City, the New Jerusalem, descends out of heaven from God, "prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." A loud voice from the throne announces: "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away" (21:3-4). The new creation is not annihilation and replacement but renewal. The Greek word is kainos — "new in quality," not neos — "new in time." The same creation, redeemed and glorified, no longer groaning under the curse. The tree of life grows again. The river of life flows again. God and man dwell together. The serpent is gone. The curse is gone. The sea (symbol of chaos) is gone. And the glory of the Lord is the light of the city. This is what every Christian is being saved for — not heaven as a waiting room, but the new earth as home.
