The Perseverance of the Saints is the Reformed doctrine that all whom God truly saves will finally be saved — that genuine believers cannot totally and finally fall away from the faith. It is the "P" in the Calvinist TULIP. The doctrine is sometimes called "Preservation of the Saints" to emphasize that the active agent is God (who preserves), not the believer (who perseveres) — though both are true. Scripture teaches it clearly. Jesus said: "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand" (John 10:27-29). Paul wrote: "He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6). And: "For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son... Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified" (Romans 8:29-30). Paul speaks of glorification in the past tense — so certain is it for those truly called. Peter writes that believers are "kept by the power of God through faith for salvation" (1 Peter 1:5). Yet Scripture also commands believers to persevere: "He who endures to the end shall be saved" (Matthew 24:13). How do these fit? Perseverance is the means by which God preserves His elect. True believers persevere because God preserves them; they do not persevere by their own strength. Those who do not persevere prove they were never truly regenerated: "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us" (1 John 2:19). The doctrine is a massive comfort: salvation does not depend on our precarious grip on God but on God's unshakeable grip on us.
John 10:27-29 — "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand."
Philippians 1:6 — "Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."
Romans 8:29-30 — "For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son... Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified."
1 Peter 1:5 — "Who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time."
1 John 2:19 — "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us."
