Reconciliation
/ˌrɛk.ən.sɪl.i.ˈeɪ.ʃən/
noun (doctrine)
Greek katallage (καταλλαγή) — "exchange, restoration of favor." The doctrine that God, while we were His enemies, took the initiative to restore the broken relationship between Himself and humanity through the substitutionary death of Christ, and now entrusts the "ministry of reconciliation" to His church.

📖 Biblical Definition

Reconciliation is the biblical doctrine that God has ended the war between Himself and sinners through the death of Christ. It has three essential dimensions. First, reconciliation presupposes real enmity. We were not merely lost or wandering; we were enemies of God. "You, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled" (Colossians 1:21). "When we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son" (Romans 5:10). This is the honest diagnosis. Sin is not a mistake; it is hostility. Second, reconciliation was God's initiative, not ours. We did not approach God with olive branches; He approached us with a cross. "All things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ" (2 Corinthians 5:18). "God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them" (2 Corinthians 5:19). The one offended took the first step. Third, reconciliation is accomplished by the cross. "Having made peace through the blood of His cross" (Colossians 1:20). The enmity was real, the reconciliation was costly, the means was the death of God's own Son. The moment any sinner trusts Christ, the war is over; He is no longer at enmity with God but at peace. And then, remarkably, God entrusts to the reconciled the ministry of reconciliation: "Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God" (2 Corinthians 5:20). The reconciled become the messengers. Every Christian carries a message whose subject is how God ended the war — and an invitation for others to lay down their arms.
