The believer's entering into the rest God promised, ceasing from self-justifying works and resting in Christ's finished work. Hebrews 4 develops the theme: the Sabbath of Genesis 2, the Promised-Land rest that Israel forfeited through unbelief, and the eschatological rest still remaining for the people of God (there remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God, Heb 4:9). The Greek sabbatismos (Sabbath-rest) appears only here in the NT — a unique term naming the unique reality. The rest of faith is entered now (Heb 4:3: for we which have believed do enter into rest) and consummated at the end. It is not idleness; the Christian still labors (Heb 4:11: let us labour therefore to enter into that rest) but labors from the rest, not for it. Christ's yoke is easy because His finished work is the foundation.
