Shadow of the Almighty
noun phrase
God's protective presence over His people

📖 Biblical Definition

The image of God's protective covering, especially in Psalm 91. The opening verse: He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. The Hebrew tsel Shaddai (shadow of the Almighty) draws on multiple registers: the shade that protects from desert sun, the eagle's wings that cover its young (Ps 91:4), the cloud that overshadowed Israel by day, the wings of the cherubim over the mercy seat. Throughout Scripture, the LORD's shadow is a covering that protects the believer from harm without confining him (Ps 17:8; 36:7; 57:1; 63:7; Isa 25:4). Christ Himself uses the image when He laments over Jerusalem: how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! (Matt 23:37). To dwell under the shadow of the Almighty is to take refuge in His care — not from circumstance but in the midst of it.
