Spiritual warfare is the biblical framework for understanding the Christian life as a real conflict with real supernatural enemies. Paul is explicit: "We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 6:12). This is not metaphor. The devil is a person, not a cartoon. Demons are real spiritual beings. The Christian has a target on his back because he belongs to Christ. Scripture describes spiritual warfare in several ways. Our adversary: "Your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). His methods: deception (John 8:44), accusation (Revelation 12:10), temptation (Matthew 4), harassment (2 Corinthians 12:7). His limits: he cannot touch the Christian without God's permission (Job 1-2); he is a defeated enemy whose head has been crushed at Calvary (Genesis 3:15, Colossians 2:15); he will be thrown into the lake of fire at the end (Revelation 20:10). Our weapons: "The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:4-5). Prayer, Scripture, the name of Jesus, the blood of Christ, the fellowship of the church, and a sanctified life are the believer's arsenal. Two errors to avoid: (1) Ignoring spiritual warfare — treating everything as merely natural, psychological, or circumstantial. Much of what passes for "mental health crisis" in the modern West has a spiritual dimension the therapist cannot see. (2) Obsessing over spiritual warfare — seeing a demon behind every difficulty, constantly rebuking unseen forces, neglecting the ordinary means of grace. The balanced position is Paul's: know your enemy, put on the armor, stand, pray, and trust the victory Christ has already won. "Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you" (James 4:7).
Ephesians 6:12 — "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 — "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ."
1 Peter 5:8-9 — "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith."
James 4:7 — "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you."
Revelation 12:11 — "And they overcame Him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony."
