Christ crucified, who scandalizes both Jewish religious expectations and Greek philosophical sensibilities. Paul: We preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God (1 Cor 1:23-24). The Greek skandalon (stumblingblock, scandal, snare) is the trip-wire of the cross — the offense of a crucified Messiah for those expecting a victorious king (Jews) and of a saving God for those reasoning from philosophical-categories alone (Greeks). Christ Himself is named a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence (Rom 9:33; 1 Pet 2:8) for those who refuse Him. The cross has not stopped scandalizing in 2026; it scandalizes modern moral-therapeutic religion, modern self-help spirituality, and modern political-utopian projects equally. To remove the scandal is to remove the gospel.
