Walking with God
/ˈwɔːk.ɪŋ wɪð ɡɒd/
noun phrase
A biblical idiom for the life of intimate, ongoing fellowship and obedience with God. First used of Enoch ("Enoch walked with God") and Noah ("Noah walked with God"), and used throughout Scripture as the basic description of the godly life.

📖 Biblical Definition

Walking with God is the most comprehensive biblical description of the godly life. It is not first a theology or a set of practices; it is a companionship. Scripture introduces the image in Genesis: "Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him" (Genesis 5:24). "Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God" (Genesis 6:9). Abraham is called to walk before God: "Walk before Me and be blameless" (Genesis 17:1). God's original intent in Eden was a walking-with relationship — He came to walk with Adam and Eve "in the cool of the day" (Genesis 3:8), but they hid. The whole story of redemption is the restoration of this walking fellowship. Micah summarizes the LORD's requirement: "to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). Paul commands: "Walk in the Spirit" (Galatians 5:16), "walk worthy of the calling" (Ephesians 4:1), "walk in love" (Ephesians 5:2), "walk as children of light" (Ephesians 5:8), "walk in wisdom" (Colossians 4:5). John tells us: "If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:7). What does walking with God look like in practice? (1) Direction — His way, not ours. (2) Pace — His speed, neither rushing ahead nor dragging behind. (3) Conversation — continual prayer as one walks with a friend. (4) Attentiveness — listening for His word and noticing what He is doing. (5) Consistency — day after day, not sporadic bursts. Enoch walked with God for 300 years before God took him. The longest walk is made one step at a time. The Christian life is not a race to an achievement; it is a walk in a relationship.
