Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector in Jericho — wealthy, powerful, and despised by his fellow Jews as a collaborator with Rome and a cheat. When Jesus passed through Jericho, Zacchaeus wanted to see Him but was "short of stature" and couldn't see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree. When Jesus came to the spot, He looked up and said, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house" (Luke 19:5). The crowd was scandalized: Jesus was going to eat with "a sinner." But the encounter transformed Zacchaeus. He stood and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold" (Luke 19:8). Jesus answered, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:9-10). The story captures the heart of the gospel in a single scene: Jesus takes the initiative, calls a man by name, comes to his house, and transforms him from the inside. Zacchaeus' response proves the conversion is real — fourfold restitution was far beyond what the law required, the sign of a man whose heart had been broken open by grace. Every Christian who has ever been surprised by grace can find himself in that tree.
