Consuming passion for God's dwelling and honor. Psalm 69:9: for the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up. The disciples remember this verse when Christ drives the moneychangers from the temple (John 2:17), recognizing in His action the messianic fulfillment of the psalmist's consumed zeal. Biblical zeal (Heb. qinah, Gk. zelos) is not generic enthusiasm; it is a specifically God-ward burning that cannot tolerate the desecration of what God has called holy. Paul names zeal that is not according to knowledge as a real danger (Rom 10:2). But knowledge-formed zeal — the Christ-pattern — turns over tables and clears the temple of every commerce that has replaced worship. Where God's house is dishonored, the consumed-zealous heart acts.
