Γαβριήλ
Gabriēl
Proper noun, masculine
Gabriel (Man of God, Mighty one of God)

Definition

The Greek form Gabriēl (G1043) represents the Hebrew name Gabriel (גַּבְרִיאֵל), meaning "God is my strength" or "Mighty man of God." Gabriel is one of only two angels named in Scripture (with Michael). He appears as God's messenger-angel sent to Daniel, Zechariah, and Mary.

Usage & Theological Significance

Gabriel stands at the hinge of redemptive history. He interpreted Daniel's visions of the seventy weeks (Daniel 9), announced the birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah (Luke 1:11-20), and declared the Incarnation to Mary (Luke 1:26-38). His consistent message is that God's plans are certain, His timing is perfect, and the long-awaited redemption is arriving. Gabriel's appearances mark the most decisive moments in God's unfolding plan of salvation.
