ἀετός
aetos
Noun (masculine)
eagle, vulture

Definition

The Greek noun aetos (ἀετός) refers to an eagle or, in some contexts, a large vulture. In the ancient world, the eagle was the king of birds — associated with power, swiftness, and divine vision. The Roman legions carried eagle standards, and Israel's God was described as caring for His people 'on eagle's wings' (Exodus 19:4).

In the New Testament, aetos appears in the proverbial saying of Jesus (Matthew 24:28 / Luke 17:37), in John's apocalyptic vision of the four living creatures (Revelation 4:7), and in the prophetic imagery of Revelation 12:14.

Usage & Theological Significance

The eagle in biblical theology carries a spectrum of meaning. On one hand, it symbolizes God's powerful, protective care — Isaiah 40:31 promises that those who hope in the LORD 'will soar on wings like eagles.' On the other, Jesus uses the eagle/vulture gathering at a carcass as an eschatological sign — where there is spiritual death and corruption, judgment gathers.

In Revelation, one of the four living creatures before God's throne has the face of an eagle — the symbol of divine omniscience and sovereign swiftness. Tradition has long associated this creature with the Gospel of John, whose soaring prologue ('In the beginning was the Word') reflects the eagle's vision that sees from the heights. Ultimately, the eagle points to God's transcendence — His ability to see all things from above and to act with swift, powerful certainty.
