γράφω
graphō
Verb
to write, it is written

Definition

To write, to compose, to record. The perfect passive participle gegraptai ('it is written') became the NT's standard formula for citing Scripture — a declaration that what was written stands as permanent, authoritative divine speech.

Usage & Theological Significance

Jesus wielded gegraptai ('it is written') against Satan in the wilderness (Matthew 4:4,7,10), treating Scripture as the decisive weapon. Paul constantly argues from 'what is written.' The formula assumes Scripture is not merely ancient literature but living, binding divine decree. 'It is written' means 'it still stands' — God's word, once inscribed, carries permanent authority.
