Δαλμανουθά
Dalmanoutha
Proper noun, place
Dalmanutha (Place near Sea of Galilee)

Definition

Dalmanutha is a place name appearing only in Mark 8:10, identifying a region on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee where Jesus and His disciples went after the feeding of the 4,000. The parallel passage in Matthew 15:39 names the region 'Magadan' (or Magdala in some manuscripts). The exact identification of Dalmanutha remains uncertain.

Usage & Theological Significance

Dalmanutha appears in the Gospel narrative immediately after the miraculous feeding of the 4,000 (Mark 8:1–9) — the second great feeding miracle. In this region, the Pharisees demanded a sign from heaven (Mark 8:11), prompting Jesus' warning about the 'yeast of the Pharisees and Herod' (8:15). The juxtaposition is striking: the same Jesus who just multiplied food for thousands is now challenged by religious leaders who demand proof. Dalmanutha is thus a location of grace rejected — the works are visible, but hardened hearts refuse to see.
