δοξάζω
Doxazo
Verb
glorify / honor / praise / magnify

Definition

Doxazo (δοξάζω) is the verb form of doxa (glory/honor) — to ascribe glory, to honor, to magnify, to cause someone's greatness to be recognized. It captures active participation in the display of God's glory: we don't merely observe glory, we proclaim, reflect, and amplify it.

Usage & Theological Significance

John's Gospel uses doxazo in a distinctive and profound way for the cross. Jesus says: 'The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified' (John 12:23) — referring to his crucifixion! The cross is paradoxically the supreme moment of divine glorification. God is 'glorified' in the Son (John 13:31-32) through the very act of sacrifice. This Johannine 'hour of glory' redefines glory entirely: not military triumph or divine display of power, but self-giving love unto death. The resurrection then reveals the glory hidden in the cross. Our calling is to doxazo God in everything (1 Corinthians 10:31: 'do all to the glory of God').

Key Bible Verses

John 12:23 And Jesus answered them, 'The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.'
John 13:31-32 When he had gone out, Jesus said, 'Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.'
Romans 8:30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
1 Corinthians 10:31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Peter 4:11 ...in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Word Study

Romans 8:30's 'golden chain' ends with glorified — remarkably in the aorist (past) tense, treating future glorification as already accomplished. This 'proleptic aorist' expresses God's certainty: the glorification of believers is so sure in God's purpose that it is spoken of as done. Every moment of Christian life lived for God's glory is a foretaste of this final glorification. John 17:22: 'The glory that you have given me I have given to them' — the sharing of divine glory is already begun.
