ἔκβασις
Ekbasis
Noun, feminine
Way Out / Exit / Outcome / Result

Definition

Ekbasis (ek = out of, basis = stepping) means a way out, an exit, an outcome, or a result. It appears twice in the New Testament: 1 Corinthians 10:13 (God's provision of a way of escape from temptation) and Hebrews 13:7 (observe the outcome of their way of life).

Usage & Theological Significance

1 Corinthians 10:13 gives ekbasis its most powerful application. In the context of Israel's wilderness failures (10:1-12), Paul promises that every temptation has a God-provided ekbasis — a way out. This is not a promise that temptation will be removed, but that God will always provide an escape route. Faithfulness to God in temptation is always possible because God never permits temptation to exceed what He equips us to bear. Hebrews 13:7 applies ekbasis to the outcomes of faithful leaders' lives — their ends demonstrate the reliability of their faith. Both uses invite trust: God provides the exit, and the faithful who run toward it leave a legacy worth emulating.

Key Bible Verses

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out (ekbasis) so that you can endure it.
Hebrews 13:7 Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.
James 1:12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
1 Corinthians 10:12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!
2 Peter 2:9 If this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.
