ἐλαχιστότερος
elachistoteros
Adjective (comparative superlative form)
Less Than the Least / Lowest of the Low

Definition

Elachistoteros (ἐλαχιστότερος, G1647) is a unique double comparative — 'less than the least' — an irregular form coined by Paul in Ephesians 3:8. From elachistos (superlative of mikros, small), meaning the least/smallest, with an additional comparative suffix, making it technically untranslatable in a single word: 'lesser than the least.' Paul uses it of himself: 'Although I am less than the least of all the Lord's people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ.'

Usage & Theological Significance

Paul's coined word elachistoteros is one of the most theologically charged coinages in the New Testament. The man who had persecuted the church, imprisoned believers, and approved Stephen's martyrdom cannot find a word low enough to describe his position among God's people — so he creates a grammatical impossibility: less than the least. Yet immediately following this depth of self-emptying comes the height of his calling: 'to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ.' This is the Pauline pattern of humility and mission: the lower you go in self-assessment, the higher the calling God can entrust to you. It is the beatitude logic: 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven' (Matthew 5:3). Elachistoteros is not self-deprecation for its own sake but the accurate calibration of one's standing before God's grace — and from that position, everything is grace, and grace is everything.
