Numeral (Cardinal)
Ninety-Nine

Definition

Enenēkontaennea (ἐνενηκονταεννέα, G1768) is the cardinal numeral ninety-nine. From enenēkonta (ninety) + ennea (nine). It appears exclusively in the Parable of the Lost Sheep (Matthew 18:12,13; Luke 15:4,7) — the shepherd leaves the ninety-nine to search for the one lost sheep. The number defines the safe majority left behind, making the rescue of the one a study in divine priorities.

Usage & Theological Significance

The ninety-nine are safe, satisfied, secure — and yet the shepherd leaves them to search for one. This parable upends all utilitarian calculus: in the kingdom of God, the mathematics of compassion are not based on percentages. Jesus' explanation in Luke 15:7 is breathtaking: 'There will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.' The joy is proportionally inverted: greater celebration for one recovered than for ninety-nine who never strayed. This is the economy of divine pursuit — God is not a portfolio manager optimizing for aggregate outcomes but a shepherd who knows each sheep by name (John 10:3) and whose love is as particular as it is universal. The ninety-nine (enenēkontaennea) make the one's significance visible: you are never 'just one among many' to God. You are always the one He goes after.
