ἐξετάζω
Exetazo
Verb
To inquire closely, examine thoroughly, search out

Definition

The Greek verb exetazo (ἐξετάζω) means to inquire closely, to examine thoroughly, or to search out. It appears three times in the New Testament and carries the sense of rigorous, methodical inquiry — not casual asking but penetrating examination.

Usage & Theological Significance

In Matthew 2:8, Herod instructs the Magi to "search diligently" — though with murderous intent. In Matthew 10:11, Jesus instructs disciples to "inquire" who is worthy. Most significantly, in John 21:12, none of the disciples dared ask Jesus "Who art thou?" — the risen Christ stands before them so obviously that further exetazo is unnecessary. The resurrection provides its own unassailable evidence.
