epiloipos
Adjective
Remaining, left over, what is yet to come

Definition

From G1909 (epi, upon) and G3062 (loipos, remaining). That which remains or is left over. Used in 1 Peter 4:2 to describe the remaining time of life in the flesh โ€” the 'rest' of one's earthly days after conversion.

Usage & Theological Significance

Peter writes that the believer should live the epiloipos of their time 'no longer to the lusts of men, but to the will of God' (1 Pet 4:2). The word frames the Christian life as a second act โ€” everything before conversion was act one; everything after is the epiloipos, the remainder that now belongs to God. The theological insight: conversion creates a decisive before-and-after. The past is forgiven; the remaining time is repurposed. This 'remaining' time is not aimless waiting but active, purpose-driven living for God's will.
