G2035 · Greek · New Testament
ἑπτακισχίλιοι
heptakischilioi
Adjective, Numeral
Seven thousand

Definition

From G2034 (heptakis, seven times) and G5507 (chilioi, a thousand). The compound number seven thousand. Used in Romans 11:4, where God tells Elijah He has reserved 7,000 faithful who have not bowed to Baal.

Usage & Theological Significance

Paul quotes the divine response to Elijah in Romans 11:4: 'I have reserved to myself heptakischilioi men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal.' This number — 7,000 — represents God's hidden remnant. Elijah thought he was alone; God revealed a community of faithful he never knew existed. Paul applies this to his own era: 'Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace' (11:5). The theological comfort is immense: God always preserves a remnant. When faithfulness seems extinct, God has thousands hidden whom we cannot see. The church is always larger than it appears to discouraged prophets.
