εὐαρεστέω
euaresteo
Verb
to please, to be well-pleasing

Definition

To please, to be well-pleasing, to walk in a way that brings delight to another. Used specifically for pleasing God — a life that brings Him satisfaction. Hebrews 11:5-6 uses it for Enoch, who 'pleased God' before being taken up, and declares that without faith it is impossible to euaresteo — to please Him.

Usage & Theological Significance

Euaresteo defines the goal of the Christian life: to please God. Hebrews 11:5 says Enoch was commended as one who pleased God — and this happened through faith (v.6). The word implies not mere obedience but delight — God is not merely satisfied but pleased. Paul makes this his ambition: 'We make it our goal to please him' (2 Corinthians 5:9). This transforms duty into devotion.
