Definition

From G2189 (echthra, enmity). One who is hostile, an adversary. Used of human enemies and of Satan. Active hostility, not mere indifference.

Usage & Theological Significance

Echthros frames Jesus' most radical teaching: 'Love your enemies' (Matthew 5:44). Agapaō toward the echthros. Paul extends: 'While we were enemies, we were reconciled to God' (Romans 5:10). The last enemy is death (1 Corinthians 15:26). God loved His enemies first β€” and commands His children to do the same.
