ζάω
zaō
Verb
to live, to be alive, to have life

Definition

To live, to be alive, to have vitality. Zaō covers physical life, spiritual life, and eternal life. In the NT, true living goes beyond biological existence — it is life in relationship with the living God. The risen Christ says, 'I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever' (Revelation 1:18).

Usage & Theological Significance

Jesus' declaration 'I live, and you also will live' (John 14:19) makes His resurrection the source of all believer's life. Paul's creed: 'It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me' (Galatians 2:20). The OT background: 'Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word from God' (Deuteronomy 8:3/Matthew 4:4). True life is not survival but Spirit-empowered participation in God's own life.
