ΞΆΞ΅ΟƒΟ„ΟŒΟ‚
zestos
Adjective
Hot, boiling, fervent

Definition

From G2204 (zeō, to boil). Literally 'boiling hot.' Used exclusively in Revelation 3:15-16 for the Laodicean church.

Usage & Theological Significance

Zestos is what Jesus wants: 'I would thou wert cold or hot.' Lukewarm is nauseating. Hot water healed (Hierapolis springs); cold water refreshed. Lukewarm was useless. The word demands a decision: passionate commitment or honest rejection. Comfortable indifference β€” the temperature at which nothing happens β€” is the worst spiritual condition.

Key Bible Verses

Revelation 3:15
...thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
Romans 12:11
Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.
Acts 18:25
...being fervent in the spirit...
Revelation 3:19
As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
