G2232 · Greek · New Testament
ἡγεμών
hēgemōn
Noun, Masculine
Governor, leader, prince

Definition

From G2233 (hēgeomai, to lead). A leader, commander, or provincial governor. Used for Roman governors — Pilate, Felix, Festus.

Usage & Theological Significance

Hēgemōn places the gospel within structures of earthly power. Jesus stood before Pilate the governor (Matthew 27:2) — the King of kings judged by a provincial functionary. Jesus prophesied followers would be brought before governors (Matthew 10:18). Human governors exercise temporary authority but unknowingly serve eternal purposes.
