G2256 · Greek · New Testament
ἡμιώριον
hēmiōrion
Noun, Neuter
Half an hour

Definition

From G2255 (hēmisu) and G5610 (hōra). Appears only in Revelation 8:1 — the silence in heaven after the seventh seal.

Usage & Theological Significance

Hēmiōrion describes perhaps the most dramatic silence in Scripture. After six seals of cosmic upheaval, the seventh produces silence — 'about the space of half an hour.' Heaven, filled with ceaseless worship, goes utterly quiet. The seven trumpets are about to sound. Even heaven holds its breath before God's final acts. The half-hour is the hush before the holy.
