θυσία
thysia
Noun, feminine
sacrifice, offering

Definition

A sacrifice or offering — something presented to God, often involving the shedding of blood. Thysia covers the entire OT sacrificial system and its fulfillment in Christ's once-for-all sacrifice on the cross. It also describes the believer's response: the 'living sacrifice' of Romans 12:1.

Usage & Theological Significance

Hebrews argues that the OT thysiai were shadows pointing to Christ's perfect sacrifice: 'It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins' (10:4). Christ 'offered one sacrifice for sins for all time' (Hebrews 10:12). The Christian response is not more animal sacrifice but 'a sacrifice of praise' (Hebrews 13:15) and bodies offered as 'living sacrifices' (Romans 12:1). The cross ends all other altars.
