ἵππος
hippos
Noun, masculine
horse

Definition

A horse — in the ancient world, the supreme instrument of warfare and royal power. Horses were expensive, military assets that symbolized national strength and imperial ambition.

Usage & Theological Significance

Horses in Scripture consistently represent human military power that competes with trust in God. 'Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD' (Ps 20:7). Israel's kings were commanded not to multiply horses (Deut 17:16). In Revelation, the four horsemen ride hippoi as instruments of divine judgment — God commandeering the very symbol of human power for His own purposes. The white horse of Revelation 19:11 carries Christ the victorious King.
