G2524 · Greek · New Testament
καθίημι
Kathiēmi
Verb
To let down, lower

Definition

Kathiēmi (G2524) means to let down or lower — used of carefully lowering something from a height. It appears in accounts of lowering the paralyzed man through the roof and Paul's escape from Damascus in a basket.

Usage & Theological Significance

Luke 5:19 records the faith that 'let him down (kathēkan) through the tiles' to reach Jesus — one of the most dramatic images of desperate, creative faith in the Gospels. Jesus responds to this visible faith with healing and forgiveness. The same verb covers Paul's lowering over the Damascus wall (Acts 9:25) — the apostle beginning his ministry in vulnerability, dependent on others to bear him to safety. Faith and community go together.
