ἀμαράντινος
Amarantinos
Adjective
Unfading, Amaranthine

Definition

The Greek adjective amarantinos means "made of amaranth" or "unfading." The amaranth was a flower legendary in antiquity for not withering. Applied to the crown of glory in 1 Peter 5:4, it describes something that will never lose its beauty or value.

Usage & Theological Significance

Peter uses amarantinos to describe the "crown of glory" that faithful shepherds will receive from the Chief Shepherd (1 Peter 5:4). In contrast to perishable laurel wreaths given to earthly victors, the believer's reward is imperishable and eternal. Everything offered by the world fades; only what is from God endures forever.
