κατέναντι
katénanti
Preposition/Adverb
Opposite, In the Presence Of

Definition

Katénanti (κατέναντι) means opposite, over against, in front of, in the presence of. A strengthened form of enanti. It appears in both geographical and theological contexts.

Usage & Theological Significance

The most theologically weighty use is Romans 4:17: Abraham had faith 'katénanti God' — in His very presence, before His face. This intensifies Abraham's faith: it was not theoretical belief but faith exercised in direct relationship with the God who sees all. God's omniscience means faith is never private — always before His face. This appears also in 2 Corinthians 2:17: 'in Christ we speak before God with sincerity.'

Key Bible Verses

Romans 4:17 He is our father in the sight of God (katénanti), in whom he believed — the God who gives life to the dead.
2 Corinthians 2:17 In Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as those sent from God.
Hebrews 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is laid bare before him.
