ἄμετρος
ámetros
Adjective
Immeasurable / Boundless / Without measure

Definition

The Greek adjective ámetros (ἄμετρος) means without measure, immeasurable, or beyond bounds. It comes from the negative prefix a- and metron (measure).

Usage & Theological Significance

Ámetros appears in 2 Corinthians 10:13-15 where Paul contrasts himself with his opponents who 'boast beyond measure' — they measure themselves by wrong standards and claim credit for others' work. Paul refuses to boast ámetros — beyond the limits God has assigned to him. This is a striking theology of calling: each believer is given a specific sphere (kanon) of ministry, and faithfulness means working within that God-given measure rather than overreaching into another's field. The one who boasts immoderately has lost sight of grace — everything we have was received.

Key Bible Verses

2 Corinthians 10:13 We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us.
2 Corinthians 10:15 Neither do we go beyond our limits by boasting of work done by others.
Romans 12:3 Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.
1 Corinthians 4:7 For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?
Galatians 6:4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.
