λύπη
lypē
Noun, feminine
grief, sorrow, pain

Definition

Grief, sorrow, pain of heart. Lypē describes emotional suffering — the ache of loss, disappointment, or conviction. The NT distinguishes between godly grief that leads to repentance and worldly grief that leads to death (2 Corinthians 7:10).

Usage & Theological Significance

Paul's distinction is critical: 'Godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation, but worldly grief produces death' (2 Corinthians 7:10). Jesus was 'a man of sorrows' (Isaiah 53:3), and He wept at Lazarus' tomb. Christian faith does not deny grief but transforms it — 'your sorrow will turn into joy' (John 16:20). The promise: God 'will wipe every tear from their eyes' (Revelation 21:4).
