μακάριος
makarios
Adjective
blessed, happy, fortunate

Definition

The Greek word for blessedness — not emotional happiness dependent on circumstances, but the deep well-being of those who are right with God. The Beatitudes (Matt 5) open with makarios.

Usage & Theological Significance

Makarios was used in Greek of the gods who lived free from human troubles, and of the dead who were beyond earthly care. Jesus redefines it entirely — the blessed are the poor in spirit, the mourning, the persecuted.

Key Bible Verses

Matthew 5:3 Blessed [makarios] are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Revelation 1:3 Blessed [makarios] is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy.
Romans 4:7-8 Blessed [makarios] are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven.

Word Study

The Beatitudes reverse every worldly measure of blessing. Jesus declares the mourning, the meek, the persecuted to be makarios — blessed beyond those the world counts happy. Paul's citation of Ps 32 in Romans 4 applies makarios to justification.
