A noun referring to a limb or member of the body. Paul uses it extensively as a metaphor for individual believers as members of the body of Christ. Each member has a distinct function, yet all belong to one body.
Paul's 'body of Christ' metaphor in 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12 depends heavily on this word. Every believer is a member of Christ's body, with unique gifts and functions. No member can say to another, 'I don't need you' (1 Corinthians 12:21). This teaches interdependence, humility, and the dignity of every role in the church. James also warns about the tongue as a member that can corrupt the whole body.
