Μεταξυ
Metaxu
Adverb/Preposition
Between / In the Midst

Definition

From meta (with) and a root meaning 'in between.' Functions as an adverb or preposition meaning between, in the middle, or meanwhile. Used geographically, temporally, and relationally.

Usage & Theological Significance

Jesus used this word in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, where Abraham declares that a great chasm has been fixed between paradise and Hades (Luke 16:26). This word also appears in Acts 15:9, where Peter declares God made no distinction between Jews and Gentiles, purifying their hearts by faith. These usages illustrate both the eternal separation sin creates and the radical unity the gospel achieves.
