μέρος
Meros
Noun, neuter
Part, share, portion, district

Definition

The Greek noun meros means a part, a share, a portion, or a district. It is used literally of a portion of something, of a geographic district or region, and theologically of a person's 'share' or 'part' in the kingdom of God or in judgment. The phrase 'have no part' (meros) in something denotes total exclusion.

Usage & Theological Significance

Meros carries significant theological weight in John's writings. In John 13:8, Jesus tells Peter, 'Unless I wash you, you have no part with me' — referring to saving union with Christ. Revelation uses meros to describe one's 'share' in the lake of fire (Revelation 21:8) or in the tree of life (Revelation 22:19). Every person has a meros — a destination, a portion. The question is which one.
